Mr. Maestre became a member of Local 237 in 2010. He says the union makes him feel “great – and safe and secure.  The union provides for us, and when we call the union, we get results.”

Mr. Maestre enjoys being a Caretaker because he likes working outside, being with people and enjoys working with his co-workers. He comes from a family tradition of NYCHA workers.  His grandfather, Ivan Maestre, is a Local 237 retiree; his uncle was an auto mechanic, his sister a supervisor of grounds and his other sister a plasterer helper.

Mr. Maestre teaches martial arts at the Sotomayor Community Center.  Two years ago, he was designated a “Housing Hero” when he rescued a family of 5 from a fire in their apartment at Claremont Consolidated.
